My Introduction to this thing called Hip Hop

It was 1983 when I caught the Hip Hop bug. Like many other 11 year old kids from the London suburbs I'd just seen Grandmaster Flash, Melle Mel and The Furious Five perform "White Lines" on the BBC's Top Of The Pops program. I'd never heard anything like it before and it blew me away. A great hook, incredible rhymes from the great Melle Mel, clear perfectly timed lyrics riding an amazing bassline and beat. Then there was the sight of the DJ, Grandmaster Flash manipulating the records with his hands... In an instant I knew what I wanted to do with my life, I wanted to be Grandmaster Flash. Of course being that young I had no idea that the song was about the misuse of cocaine and my parents watching the show with me and my brother probably had no idea either! Anyway I was hooked on Hip Hop and I wanted more.
